The Journey as a gift
In today’s society teenagers have many things going through their heads; social media, questions at school, trips with friends or the first so-called “cooked”. But I rarely heard teenagers talk about travel or just talk about the urge or curiosity about visiting a place. Among these there is my brother of 16 years, and little or nothing has served to see his sister always with the suitcase ready to stimulate in him the desire to get the nose out of the small province in which we live. In December my brother Alessandro began to express the desire to receive the PlayStation 4 as a birthday present. Initially I found a normal request even if I could not bear the idea of seeing him all afternoon in the room playing on I do not know what a horrible game of war, so I started to inform myself about prices both on the web and at the points of sale, but the prices were not below 400 €. The idea that I could buy a plane ticket with the same price took over and convinced me that a 16-year-old boy had to start getting to know the world. I knew that one of the cities that Alexander wanted to see was Barcelona. So one day I went home and told my decision to leave together for 4 days. His reaction at the beginning was not the best because he understood that for the PS4 he had to wait another year but surrendered to his sister’s stubbornness.
on January 8th we left from Ciampino and I was finally starting to see my enthusiastic brother. We landed in Barcelona, happy to have the whole day to start visiting the city. On the way from the airport to the center of Barcelona, my brother did nothing else but look out of the glass.
I booked the hotel in Passeig de Gracia, to make sure that we could move around on foot. We put our bags and went to a typical restaurant that I already knew to make my brother taste tapas.
Attending the hotel school, Alessandro was shocked by the amount of Italians working there and thanks to my ease of getting acquainted, we asked for advice on possible first experiences for a young lad in the business sector.
In those 4 days I took Alessandro to visit all the beautiful things that the city has, Casa Batlo, the Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, endless walks on the Rambla, and I was so happy to share such beautiful moments with him alone. He liked tapas so much that he ate them while we were walking. He is not a very extrovert boy but from his expressions I understood what he was trying to find in a city so full of people all over the world.
I really hoped that those days were used to leave a message to a teenager who has a lifetime to discover the world, to get involved, to explore and live experiences that could make him have a different view of life. That vision and that curiosity that I have in wanting to know the world to offer really has so much.
In its simplicity this gift was the most beautiful thing I could do to my brother, and that’s what I would recommend to you in case you want to give a present. With the same money of a PS4 we traveled in 2, we visited a city and we met fantastic people who without too many problems have made it clear to my brother how important it is to travel, how much work experience abroad can train you and make you feel free.
